At the beginning, there were fire, light, and water. Seas, mountains, and Vals Stone were formed. That was around 200 million years ago…

Grown from Stone

…Then the “Walser” people arrived from the Valais region, building their village with wood from the forests and stone from the mountains. That was around 700 years ago.
The Truffers came later and opened the quarry, extracted the stone, built production halls, and invested in machinery to process Vals Stone on site. Today, 50 employees find work in our company.

House Balma

Our passion for architecture is also reflected in our new office building. Japanese architect Kengo Kuma showcases Vals Stone in a distinctive and unconventional way throughout our new building.
More than ten years ago, Truffer AG in Vals decided to construct a new residential and commercial building. The aim was to create a structure that blends harmoniously into the traditional mountain village while simultaneously presenting modern forms and innovative uses of materials – always in harmony with nature and the central element: stone.

The shape of the building is based on the geometry of the triangle. Stone, wood, and glass define its appearance, combining local tradition with contemporary expression. Special architectural elements, such as the “floating stones” forming a curtain around the building and Japanese canopy roofs reflect the balance between lightness and weight.

The interior continues this interplay of materials and design: the basement serves as a meeting and cultural space with generous use of Vals Stone, while the ground floor combines a reception area, workstations, and a shop for stone objects. The central staircase creates the feeling of a high rock face and connects the different levels up to the upper apartments.

The building brings together architecture, craftsmanship and nature in a harmonious, open space that encourages encounters, exchange, and creativity – inspired by the local tradition of the “open door”.
