Bundesplatz
Bern, Switzerland, 2004
Built to last at the heart of Switzerland
Vals Quartzite has also found its place in the heart of Switzerland’s capital. For more than 20 years, its sandblasted paving slabs have lined the square in front of the Federal Palace, shaping the country’s political centre.
The stone was selected for its exceptional compressive strength, frost resistance and distinctive natural texture. Since 2004, the large format slabs have withstood the demands of daily public use. Every day, thousands of people cross Bundesplatz, making it one of Switzerland’s most frequented public spaces. More about the project

The paving slabs are 60 cm wide and have a fixed length of 100 cm. To withstand the heavy demands placed on Bundesplatz, they were produced with a thickness of 6.3 cm. Their sandblasted surface provides excellent slip resistance while enhancing the natural character of the stone.
Function & use
Bundesplatz is a vibrant public space throughout the year. In addition to the many daily visitors, market stalls are regularly assembled and dismantled, while public events, political demonstrations and official state occasions take place here. The integrated water fountains are a particular attraction, especially during the warmer months. The weekly market and Bern’s famous Onion Market also place considerable demands on the square’s surface year after year.
Sustainability & regional values
For the square in front of the Federal Palace, only a Swiss natural stone was considered. We are proud that the City of Bern chose Vals Quartzite for this prestigious project. From quarrying the stone to processing and the finished product, every stage of production was carried out locally in Vals, creating a truly Swiss product.
