Vals Quartzite – from façade to swimming pool
In the Hahnwald district of Cologne, a private residence was completed in 2016, making extensive use of Vals Quartzite as a defining design element. The natural stone is used both on the exterior façade and throughout the interior, creating a consistent and tranquil material language. A particularly distinctive feature is the layered stone masonry, which continues seamlessly from the façade into the interior spaces. More about the project

The exterior façade features sawn layered stone masonry with a varied arrangement of stone courses. Three different course heights – 3.1, 6.3 and 9.8 cm – create a façade that is both lively and balanced. The masonry has a thickness of 9 cm.
Vals Quartzite is also used extensively throughout the interior. The swimming pool basin is fully clad in Vals Stone. In addition, the walls feature layered stone masonry, while the pool surround and floor slabs are made from Vals Quartzite. All stone surfaces in the interior are coarsely honed, giving the spaces a natural, tactile quality.
Architectural features
The project is characterised by a particularly harmonious atmosphere and a consistent approach to the material. The layered stone masonry is used both outdoors and indoors, creating a visual connection between the building envelope and the interior spaces.
In 2018, the residence received the German Design Award.

Characteristics & solutions
The lining of the swimming pool basin presented a particular challenge. A special selection of stone was made for the underwater application. The Vals Quartzite was also cut against the natural bedding direction of the stone to ensure the highest possible durability under prolonged contact with water.
