The quiet strength of stone in the heart of Zurich
Completed in 2014, Sechseläutenplatz in Zurich is one of Switzerland’s most significant natural stone projects. It also holds a special place in our company’s history. Covering approximately 14,000 m², the square is one of the country’s largest public urban spaces. Much of its surface is paved with Vals Quartzite stone paving, giving the square its distinctive identity. The stones, laid in varying lengths and featuring natural colour variations and individual textures, create a vibrant appearance while highlighting the unique character of Vals Quartzite. The paving of Sechseläutenplatz consists of 10 cm thick Vals Quartzite laid in the form of natural stone paving. The stone strips are available in two widths, 10 cm and 13 cm, and were laid in random lengths ranging from 50 to 130 cm. Sawn on all sides and finished with a sandblasted surface, the stones highlight the natural texture of Vals Quartzite while providing excellent slip resistance for this heavily frequented public space.
The 5 mm joints and the bonded construction method create a durable paving system capable of withstanding the demands of an intensively used urban square.
Function & use
Situated between Bellevue, the Opera House and Lake Zurich, Sechseläutenplatz provides a generous public space for a wide variety of activities. It serves as a place for everyday encounters as well as a venue for major public events, including the Sechseläuten festival, Circus Knie and numerous other cultural events.
Sustainability & regional values
A key priority for the City of Zurich was the use of a Swiss building material. We are therefore especially proud that Vals Quartzite was chosen. Quarried and processed entirely in Vals, it represents a regional natural stone with short transport distances and a strong local value chain.
