Layered masonry in Western Switzerland

The façade of this private residence is constructed using sawn layered masonry made from Vals Quartzite. While the Therme Vals features three different layer heights, the masonry of this house is composed entirely of a uniform layer height of 4.7 cm.

To create a vibrant and natural façade, carefully selected stones with varying shades and textures were used, ranging from lighter to darker tones and from more linear to more richly textured surfaces. This deliberate selection highlights the natural colour variations and structural character of Vals Quartzite.

Each layer of stone is 8 cm deep, forming a solid, monolithic exterior envelope. In addition to the façade, the exterior paving and the swimming pool were also finished in Vals Quartzite, creating a consistent architectural material palette throughout the project. More about the project
