The Qantas First Class Lounge at Sydney Airport was designed by Marc Newson and Sébastien Segers. Since 2004, they have shaped the design of Qantas First Class Lounges, combining contemporary architecture with a tribute to the golden age of aviation in the 1950s and 1960s. Vals Quartzite plays a distinctive role in the spa area of the lounge. Coarse-honed floor slabs in random lengths were used for the flooring. The walls were clad in sawn layered stone masonry. Unlike traditional layered stone masonry, this application uses a reduced wall thickness and a uniform course height.
The natural materiality of Vals Quartzite creates an intriguing contrast with the luxurious interiors. Combined with wood, brass, marble and lush greenery, it creates an elegant and sophisticated atmosphere.
Architectural features
The lounge is located above the existing terminal and offers expansive views across the airport apron and the Sydney skyline. A 90-metre-long, curved pathway forms a central element of the design.
The project has received numerous awards, including the Skytrax Award for Best First Class Lounge in 2008, as well as various Australian design and architecture awards.
